京都観光とグルメのブログ

It was a mistake to eat chilled chuka at a famous restaurant in Nishiki Market, Kyoto. Fumiya Restaurant.

On a hot summer day, I wander around in search of lunch.

I looked around impatiently and saw “Shokudo Fumiya” in front of me.

Oh, I know something about this place. It’s a famous restaurant.

Sakai-machi-dori, Takoyakushi-sagaru. The nearest stations are Shijo and Karasuma, about a 5-minute walk.

It was founded as a sweet store in Nishiki Market and is now famous for Kyoto udon, especially nabeyaki udon.

Nabeyaki udon in summer? That’s tough. But it is famous as Kyo udon, so let’s go in!

Although the restaurant has been in business for 70 years, it has zero old-fashioned charm.

In fact, it has the feel of a fast-food restaurant.

Is it because the seats and tables are small enough to accommodate one person?

The wallpaper also looks like a McDonald’s.

On the other hand, the air conditioner works well, which is nice.

The menu is gorgeous, like a little booklet.

You can sense the attention to detail that seems to be typical of this long-established restaurant.

Naturally, the best item on the menu is the “Fumiya Nabe,” a nabeyaki udon noodle dish bearing the restaurant’s name, for 690 yen.

690 yen for nabiyaki udon is cheap. Indeed.

Moreover, the soup stock is made from ingredients such as Rishiri kelp, mackerel, Japanese sardines, and Soda-bushi (dried bonito flakes).

This is sure to be a popular dish.

Mail order is also available. As one would expect from a long-established shop, they are very shrewd.

There is also “Shippoku-Udon” (udon noodle), which is typical of Kyoto.

But it’s summer time, so I decided to try something different: chilled chuka (chilled Chinese noodles)!

But the soup stock will be the same, and you will be able to taste the Tomiya style!

Here it comes! Chilled chuka.

The appearance of the egg is very Kyoto-like, but the quantity is too small.

This is also typical of Kyoto, but….

If an adult male were to open his mouth and eat it, he would finish it in three bites.

The chashu (pork) was about 1mm thick. It looks like a sticker.

The taste is…. The dashi broth flavor was definitely decent, but overall, it was just average.

So, I scooped out about three noodles at a time and ate them elegantly.

Otherwise, I would have finished it in about two minutes.

I scooped up three noodles, chewed them slowly for about 20 times, and swallowed them.

Even if I tried my best to extend the time, I finished it in about five minutes.

I didn’t really feel like I was at a long-established and famous restaurant.

Maybe I should have gone for the nabeyaki udon.

But it looked like the quantity was quite small there, too.

I wish they would double the price and double the quantity.

Maybe I will come back in the winter.
