【70B antiques】Reflecting on the Difference Between Antiques and Vintage at a Kyoto Furniture Shop.

70B antiques, an antique furniture shop located on Sanjo Street, east of Takakura.

You’ll spot it right away—furniture spilling out the front because it couldn’t all fit inside, lol.

I thought it might be a small shop, but stepping inside revealed it was surprisingly spacious, packed with an incredible amount of furniture scattered about.

Looking at their website, surprisingly, they bill themselves as “Kyoto’s largest antique shop in Western Japan,”

and their purchasing volume seems insane.

They import over 20 forty-foot containers annually. That sounds pretty impressive.

Their sourcing locations include the UK, Netherlands, France, Belgium, and the US.

They also have a showroom in Minami Ward, Kyoto, which piques my interest too.

The store feels like a warehouse now.

But that’s part of the fun. Even though most items aren’t displayed, I enjoy the thrill of hunting through it all.

It seems every piece has been professionally restored in Japan.

Of course, with antiques, you get wobbly chairs and all sorts of quirks,

but they make sure everything is fully functional.

That’s a huge help!

I often watch foreign movies and see all these pieces of furniture that look so stylish even though they seem like nothing special.
It’s that antique charm, or the sense that they’ve been used normally, that’s appealing.

Chairs like this too, you know? They’re stylish, but…
Still, when I actually think about my own home, I can’t quite figure out where to put them.

The chairs around here are also stylish with their vivid colors.

But, hmm, we have a sofa already. And we don’t really need a single chair right now.

Still, is this actually antique?

I thought anything over 100 years old was antique, and anything newer was vintage…

But after Googling it, I found out this definition was established by the US,

and apparently doesn’t exist in Europe, where antiques originated.

Hmm, complicated.

Tin boxes scattered here and there. Useful or not quite…

Those who see their value will buy them.

A shiny new decorative piece. Might come in handy depending on how I decide to set up the room.

This place is elegant. They have a wide variety of stylish goods.

Oh, I kinda want this. It’s cool.

I wonder why there aren’t four of them.

Window frames, lighting fixtures, you name it.

I think asking, “Do you have something like this?” works well at this shop.

You’ll probably find it. And if you don’t, I have a feeling it’ll arrive on the next container shipment.
