How to walk around the “Ishibe Koji” and “Yasaka-no-to” areas that are full of Kyoto-like atmosphere.

Ishibe Koji and Yasaka-no-to (Pagoda of Yasaka) are representative of the streetscape typical of Kyoto.

Ishibe Koji has beautiful stone pavement and townhouse fences with brick, wooden, and stone walls for each house,

As you stroll along, you will see the shifting fences, which is very Kyoto-like and full of emotion.

The reason for this scenery is said to be that the paving stones of the Kyoto City Tram were relocated there from the Meiji and Taisho Periods, when there were rows of houses rented out by teahouses,

This is said to be the reason why this landscape was created.

Therefore, it is a little more recent than pure Japanese style,

The retro atmosphere of modern Japanese style is also different from other Kyoto-like places.

However, there is one caveat. Photography was allowed until a few years ago, but now it is not.

Located a little over 10 minutes walk from Gion-Shijo Station. It is a 5-minute walk from the Higashiyama Yasui stop on the city bus.

But it is difficult to find from here.

Walk along Nene-no-michi and when you come to Kodaiji Park, look on the other side and you will see a narrow alley!

Although it is a street that often appears in images of Kyoto, it is a hidden gem that few people actually visit.

Although there are many sightseeing spots such as Kodaiji Temple, Aneizaka Slope, Yasaka-no-to, and so on around the street, it is a very rare place to visit.

This is a recommended spot to visit if you are planning to go to any of the tourist spots in the area.

The brickwork and other elements give the place a slightly retro feel, and the atmosphere is superb.

The atmosphere is about 30% better at night and 40% better when it rains.

and nearby is Yasaka-no-to (Pagoda of Yasaka).

This area is really fun to walk around.

Yasaka-no-to from this angle is very picturesque.

It is 30% more beautiful when it snows.

However, I personally recommend this angle as a good spot to photograph Yasaka-no-to.

The surrounding buildings do not look modern, and there are no unnecessary things coming in from this angle.

However, tourists will inevitably come into the area.

If possible, go early in the morning to take a picture that will last a lifetime.

Yasaka-no-to is officially called Hokanji Temple. Surprisingly, it is said to have been built by that prince Shotoku Taishi!

It was founded in 592! Amazing, such a magnificent pagoda was built in such a long time ago,

What’s more, it continues to be a landmark even today.

In Kyoto, there is another very famous temple founded by Prince Shotoku.

It is “Rokkakudo” or “Tinghoji Temple”.

This temple is also called “Kyoto’s navel” and is a landmark located in the center of Kyoto.

Prince Shotoku is an amazing architectural designer.

His choice of location, durability, and innovative design would certainly have been involved in the construction of the Olympic venues in modern times.

He tends to be featured as a saint, but I think he is also an outstandingly talented architectural designer.

The building is so large and symbolic of Kyoto that even today it is a splendid landmark like this one, and it is still a symbolic building of Kyoto.

It’s a bit too prescient, don’t you think?

The area is already full of tourist attractions.

There are a lot of people around.

But if you go a little out of the way, there are no people at all.

Strolling around this area is fun.

We hope you will find your own walking path.
