The restaurant to which the set meal refugees drifted at Nishiki Market in Kyoto was Yanaginobanba Nishiki-Tei.

Sashimi set menus are surprisingly rare in Kyoto.

This is probably due to the fact that Kyoto is located in an inland basin, and the culture of eating sashimi has historically not been very strong.

So, as a “sashimi set menus” lover, it is quite a difficult task to find the best sashimi set menus.

Lunch on a weekday.

It was a sweltering hot day, and on a day like this, I wanted to have a sashimi set meal to refresh me, but I also wanted to eat a lot of rice.

I walked and walked until I found a restaurant near Nishiki Market that offered a sashimi set meal, but not sashimi set meal, but “Sawara no tataki (broiled Spanish mackerel)”.

Yanaginobanba Nishiki-tei. Nishiki-tei is located on Nishiki-koji-agaru, Yanaginobanba-dori.

The nearest stations are Karasuma, Shijo, and Kawaramachi, and it takes about 7 minutes from any of them.

The exterior of the shop looks like a folk art museum or a period drama, yet there are posters of artists on the wall, and the world view is somewhat inconsistent.

Moreover, it was difficult to enter the restaurant because you could not see inside at all.

But it looks like you can eat fish, and it’s a great place to go!

Inside the store, wow, I’ve done it!

Books and magazines piled up tightly. It was so crowded with books and magazines, it looked unhygienic.

I thought about turning back, but the store is so small that I felt very close to the store staff.

If I were to use an analogy, the size and atmosphere was like a bar in Shinjuku’s Golden Gai.

What is it? There is an anarchic atmosphere in the store. You can feel the ideology.

Commune, hippie, 70’s, something like that.

A person born in Kyoto, devoted to the student movement, then traveled around the world, settled in a cheap inn in Okinawa, and returned to Kyoto for the first time in several years,

After a few years, he came back to Kyoto and opened a restaurant.

The fact that smoking is allowed in this small restaurant is an anarchy.

Well, I was ready for it and ordered lunch.

Jeez! Lunch!

That’s not so bad. In fact, it’s good.

The dishes look like Okinawan yachimun, and I can’t help but think that my earlier imagination may have been right,

But the meal itself is good.

Spanish mackerel tataki style sashimi

Hamo dashi soup with egg and agar

simmered deep-fried greens

simmered pumpkin

simmered eggplant

rice and miso soup

It is good, isn’t it? It looks so good for your health.

According to what I hear, they purchase fresh ingredients from Nishiki Market every day.

Spanish mackerel tataki. Well, it’s tiny, but it’s okay because there are lots of side dishes.

The taste is also good as usual. It’s not like eating out, it’s more like a local dish from somewhere in Okinawa.

The taste is full of flavor. I think this is healthy and good.

It is as if the restaurant is  fed up with mass consumption and capitalism in the world,

proposing a simple life, a diet that is not too much for human beings.

I am sorry for saying so many things in the first half of this article!
