Kyoto Bakumatsu, Shinsengumi amusement park “Ryoroshagoya Ikedaya Hananomai

If you like the end of the Edo period, you definitely know about the Ikedaya riot.

Naturally, you would want to visit the site, but what is it like now, in the modern era of the Reiwa period?

It is now an izakaya (Japanese-style pub)!

The name of the restaurant is “Hatano Chaya Ikedaya Hananomai” (旅籠茶屋 池田屋 Hana no Mai).

Yes, it is under the umbrella of the national chain izakaya “Hana-no-Mai”.

It used to be a pachinko parlor and many other things,

The fact that they still have “Ikedaya” in the name is a sign of respect.

It’s easy for history buffs and Bakumatsu fans to get together.

But the situation is a little different.

Yes, the exterior looks like this. It is properly “Ikedaya” style.

I am relieved.

The location is a 4-minute walk from Sanjo Station on the Keihan Line.

It is also a 5-minute walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station.

There is a stone monument in front of the restaurant. This is definitely the place.

Next to the monument, there is also a detailed description of the Ikedaya Disturbance.

For those who do not know, here is a brief explanation of the Ikedaya Disturbance.

It was July 8, 1864, at the end of the Edo period.

The Shinsengumi, who were guarding the city of Kyoto, received information that the Choshu Clan, Tosa Clan, and other loyalist groups were planning to set fire at the Imperial Palace on a windy day before the Gion Festival.

They also obtained information that a meeting was to be held one evening to decide whether or not to carry out the plan.

The meeting was to be held at Ikedaya and Shikokuya.

The Shinsengumi split into two groups, the Kondo group and the Hijikata group, and headed for Ikedaya and Shikokuya, respectively.

And at Ikedaya, where the meeting was actually held, the Kondo group entered the battle!

Isamu Kondo, Soji Okita, Shinpachi Nagakura, and Heisuke Todo step into Ikedaya,

Others also fortify the entrances and exits.

Miyabe Kinzo and other noble warriors are killed, and the Kinno expulsionist faction is dealt a severe blow.

This grudge later led to the “Hamagurimi-gomon Incident” .

The story has been written about in plays for a long time.

It appears in Ryotaro Shiba’s books and “Kamata Koshinkyoku” (Kamata March), for example,

It was the setting of a very famous episode in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period.

It is said that he said, “Tonight’s Kotetsu (Isamu Kondo’s sword) cuts well” or something like that.

This was probably a later creation.

Incidentally, Kogoro Katsura was also going to attend this meeting, but he arrived early,

He was at the meeting, but escaped by going along the roof.

I don’t know how much of this is historical fact.

But the fact that the story has so many fins and feathers must mean that it was such a famous scene.

Let’s get back to the story. So, inside the store.

Ikedaya is famous for its long staircase.

The scene where the samurai who were cut down fall down this staircase is often depicted in plays and movies.

If you have seen “Kamata Koshinkyoku (Kamata March),” you know what I am talking about.

So many Bakumatsu fans from all walks of life have visited.

Yudai Ohno, pitcher of the Chunichi Dragons (oh, he is from Kyoto, isn’t he?),

The one who writes “BARAGA Oni” is the theater group Z-dan, right?

Yomiuri TV announcer Takeshi Mori, etc. The name recognition is subtle.

The interior of the store has an atmosphere of the end of the Edo period.

If anything, it is more like an amusement park than a reality.

There are already dolls and stuff. It’s totally in that vein.

The food is cheap and regular izakaya (Japanese-style bar) menu, as it is at Hana-no-Mai.

The menu includes a little bit of the Shinsengumi menu, but not that much.

In other words, it is surprisingly ordinary.

Naturally, the coaster is also Shinsengumi. If you are a fan of the Shinsengumi, you will want to take one home with you.

So, the underground is a surprise, but even though I’m a complete fan of the Shinsengumi, I’m more of an anime fan. lol.

Or rather, originally a game. There’s one called “Hakuouki.”

It’s also a musical, they say.

Saito Hajime’s hair is purple lol. It’s a great thing.

Well, I would be happy if people become interested in the end of the Edo period and Kyoto, even from such an entrance.
